Scientific Justification

The scientific justification is limited to one page and should discuss the following points:
  1. scientific background
  2. scientific analysis in a general context
  3. specific interest of these observations
The text of the justification must be entered as LaTeX source. Your text is inserted into the appropriate place in the LaTeX proposal form. You may enter the text of the justification in one of three ways:
  1. using the Scientific Justification text box on this page
  2. uploading an ascii file containing only your scientific justification from your own computer using the Scientific Justification file upload field on this page
  3. retrieving the complete LaTeX source for your proposal from the system by using the "Preview Proposal" button (see Getting Started), editing the Scientific Justification section, and then uploading the complete proposal with the "Upload LaTeX" button (see Getting Started)
A selection of commonly used text strings and symbols produced by NOAO are provided for your convenience and can be used in the scientific justification and references sections. NOAO's LaTeX guide is also available.

You enter the references for your scientific justification separately and they do not count as part of the one page limit. The journal commands are compatible with AATeX 4.0. As an example, the following text entered in the References area will produce the expected output:

\reference Bohlender, D.A., Walker, G.A.H. 1994, \mnras, 266, 891
\reference Charbonneau, P. 1991, \apj, 372, L33
\reference Gies, D.R., Percy, J.R. 1977, \aj, 82, 166

The same three options available for entering the Scientific Justification are also available for the References.

Be sure to save any information you have entered with the Save Changes button on the side-bar. This button appears on the bottom of any page so you can save new or edited information at any time. If you have not completed all of the mandatory fields in the form, or have made an error in the format of an entry, an error message will appear in your browser window. Correct any errors and save again before proceeding.

Additional information for each field on the page can be obtained by clicking on the appropriate label for the field in question.
