Guidelines for DAO

Applications

Requests for observing time on the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's 1.2-m or 1.8-m telescopes are made to the National Research Council of Canada's Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. There are four competitions per year for the calendar quarters: January - March, April - June, July - September, and October - December. We urge applicants to use the Phase One Observing Proposal System (POOPSY) operated by the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre.

The current proposal deadline for DAO can be found here. Applications are evaluated by the Time Allocation Committee, usually within 10 days of the proposal deadline. Principal investigators are normally informed about the outcome of their application about 2 weeks before the start of the quarter after a schedule has been prepared.

Page Limits

In keeping with the relatively informal procedure we try to follow for DAO telescope applications, proposers must restrict themselves to a single page for the scientific justification, including references. One additional page may be devoted to figures.

Continuing Programs

If you are submitting an application for a continuing program you need not provide a detailed scientific justification, although the TAC does appreciate being kept informed about the progress (and productivity) of such programs.
